Gun Licenses

The law of Massachusetts states firearm owners to be licensed through their local police department if there is no local licensing authority. A license is needed for buying guns and ammunition. Prior to applying for a license, the applicant must have passed a State approved firearm safety course.

Types of Licenses

Starting January 1, 2015, Massachusetts is no longer issuing A and B licenses and only a LTC license remains which is identical to the LTC-A. In order to purchase a firearm you will need the Firearms Identification Card (FID). This permit only allows the purchase of rifles and shotguns with the capacity of 10 round maximum. It also allows for the carrying of hunting and sporting purposes.
An LTC-A permit allows an individual to purchase a firearm with a large capacity, meaning it can hold more than 10 rounds. The catch is the magazine is pre-ban, which means manufactured before September 13, 1994. Post-ban firearms with a large capacity are not legal in the state of Massachusetts.
The LTC-B is a license that permits the purchase and possession of all high capacity rifles and shotguns as well as standard handguns. There is a restriction on buying high-capacity handguns which exclude guns with a magazine capacity over 10 rounds.
